February 2026

A short month but so much activity despite the continuing wet weather.

Council have put up new fencing along the pathway to Decoy Drive.

At least 8 pair of Heron at their nests – busy collecting sticks to repair overwinter damage – sometimes so thick they struggle to thread it in.

At dusk we were treated to the sight of Little Egrets roosting and to our surprise several of the smaller Cattle Egrets, distinguished by their yellow beak.  Over several nights  the number of Cattle Egrets grew to 9 and then 14 but they circled and flew off and have not returned. Maybe next year some will nest.

Crocus

Crocus have been very plentiful and large probably due to the wet weather.

Plenty of Robins and Wrens singing and staking their territories while someone has been busy putting up many nest boxes with Blue Tit size holes. It will be interesting to see if any get used as there are so many natural sites.

On the 23rd I saw the male Swan start nest building  after mating and he was still trying to persuade the remaining Cygnet to leave. It showed off it’s strong flight but is not interested in leaving.

There were some really wonderful sunsets at the time all the Crows and Jackdaws were flying to roost.
